Community Service

Hangtown Kennel Club is very active in our local community.  The events on this page are an example of some of our efforts

El Dorado County Canine Sheriff Donation 2019

Hangtown Kennel Club donated $1200 to support local El Dorado County Sheriff Deputy Evan Vaughn and his dog Apollo.  The money for the donation was raised by HKC's 2018 AKC show opportunity drawing and was presented by 2019 club President Dorris Wiglesworth and Community Action Chair Dennis Collingwood.

Doggie Walk Bags

Hangtown Kennel Club has donated many "Doggie Bag" Dispensers which are installed on local trails, the El Dorado County Fairgrounds and at the Library in Placerville.  HKC also supplies refill bags for these dispensers at the rate of several thousand annually.  This is one more way that we help to keep our community clean and "dog friendly.

UC Davis Veterinary Scholarships

Hangtown Kennel Club funds two separate Scholarships for students at the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.  The "Josephine T. Pope" Memorial scholarship was established in 1992 by Hangtown Kennel Club in memory of Jo Pope, a founder of the club and Springer Spaniel enthusiast.  An additional Hangtown Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999.  They are given to students with an interest in small animal medicine and experience with AKC Club activities.  Preference for the awards is given to past or present residents of El Dorado County.

Therapy Visits

Hangtown members and their dogs make regular visits to retirement and convalescent communities for Pet Therapy. Our furry friends are always welcome visitors.

AKC Community Achievement Award 2015

The American Kennel Club recognized the Hangtown Kennel Club with a Community Achievement Award! The award supports and recognizes outstanding public education and legislation efforts from AKC-affiliated clubs, AKC-recognized federations and their members. The AKC selects award recipients who promote responsible dog ownership within their communities or who have successfully introduced, monitored and responded to legislative issues affecting dog ownership.
